Chapter Eighteen
Noah
“Come on, Jude, be reasonable. We can't do the rest of the show butt-naked!” I gestured melodramatically at my body and then at Brenner's.
“I don't know why you're telling me,” Jude said. “I'm just the camera droid.”
“You talk to the fucking producers. You can tell them...”
“Tell them what? That you want to eject?”
“Tell them it fucks with your ability to get decent images. I don't know, tell 'em something.”
“Ejection is off the table.” Brenner's jaw was set, his tone even. “My mother needs that money.”
“Nobody's talking about ejecting,” I said. “But we're entitled to one set of clothes like everybody else.”
Jude was obnoxious about where he pointed his camera. Really? He was trying to get a light balance off my ass cheeks now? “Did you even read the rules? You're not entitled to a fucking thing except the right to cry like a baby and eject by skydiving out of an airplane.”
“This is bullshit, Jude,” Brenner said. “You knew what they were planning.”
Jude's mouth shifted. I suspected he was sympathetic. Hell, our backstory-- the whole thing about wanting to win the money to pay for Sylvie's experimental treatment-- would make us sympathetic to just about anyone. “Don't you think I'd like to be the guy who films the winners? I don't know what to tell you. I'd like to be considered for other jobs in the future, and that isn't going to happen if I turn out to be a guy who yaps about the script.”
I squinted my eyes in his direction, trying to decide if it made him look any better. “This was in the fucking script? The gay couple loses their clothes?”
“It's a great twist.” Jude sounded all defensive and guilty, not that it did us any fucking good now. “You two are the fucking stars of this thing. I really think it's a good sign. I think you guys have a real chance if you can tough it out.”
“We're fucking naked with our balls out is what we fucking are,” I said. “My agent usually negotiates a high price for naked shoots.”
Jude shrugged. “It's a contest. So it's kind of up to you whether or not you collect a high price.”
I felt like popping the smug son of a bitch, but I let Brenner take my arm and pull me back.
“He's right, baby,” Brenner said. “A lot of this show is about us. It has to be a good sign.”
I thought, but didn't say, it was probably a sign we'd be one of the last two teams. I didn't think we were necessarily going to be allowed to win. “How does all this nakey play on a Christian network?”
“It's my understanding they're going to pixelate out your naughty bits in post-production, you know, like Survivor did with that tax cheater dude back in the day.” Jude kept fiddling with the light balance, all the better not to meet my eyes.
Dillweed.
I was reasonably sure tax cheater guy was an actual nudist. As a model, sure, I know how to take off my clothes to advertise a fine men's fragrance, but come the fuck on.
